The Basics of Mirror – What’s It Made Of?

First things first, let’s talk about what a mirror is made from. At its core, a mirror is basically a flat glass sheet with a really thin layer of a reflective material on one side. The glass provides the smooth surface, and the reflective coating is what makes you see your reflection.

The type of glass we use is usually float glass. It’s called float glass because it’s made by floating molten glass on a bed of molten tin. This process results in a super – smooth and even surface, which is crucial for a good mirror. This glass has excellent optical properties, meaning it doesn’t distort the image.

Step 1: Glass Cutting and Shaping

When we get the large sheets of float glass from the glass manufacturers, the first step is to cut them into the sizes and shapes our customers need. We use a special glass cutter, which is a tool with a sharp diamond or tungsten carbide wheel. The cutter makes a small scratch on the surface of the glass, and then we apply a bit of pressure to break the glass along that scratch. We can make all sorts of shapes, like squares, rectangles, circles, or even custom – designed shapes if that’s what the customer wants.

Once the glass is cut to the right size and shape, we need to smooth out the edges. Sharp edges can be dangerous and might also cause the glass to crack later on. So, we use a grinding wheel to polish the edges, making them nice and smooth.

Step 2: Cleaning the Glass

After cutting and shaping, the glass has to be super clean before we apply the reflective coating. Any dirt, dust, or grease on the glass can prevent the coating from adhering properly and can cause imperfections in the mirror.

We start by washing the glass with a mild detergent and warm water. Then, we use a series of brushes and sponges to scrub away any stubborn dirt. After that, the glass goes through a rinse cycle to get rid of all the soap residue. Finally, we dry the glass using a stream of hot air. Sometimes, we also use a special cleaning solution that’s designed to remove even the smallest traces of contaminants.

Step 3: Applying the Reflective Coating

This is the most important step in making a mirror. There are a few different methods to apply the reflective coating, but the most common one is called silvering. In the past, mirrors were made by depositing a layer of mercury on the glass, but mercury is toxic, so we don’t use that anymore.

Silvering involves creating a chemical reaction on the surface of the glass to deposit a thin layer of silver. Here’s how it works: We prepare two solutions. One solution contains silver nitrate, which is a compound that contains silver. The other solution has a reducing agent, like formaldehyde or glucose. When we mix these two solutions and apply them to the clean glass surface, a chemical reaction occurs. The reducing agent causes the silver ions in the silver nitrate to be reduced to metallic silver, which then deposits on the glass as a thin, shiny layer.

The thickness of the silver layer is really important. If it’s too thin, the mirror won’t be very reflective. If it’s too thick, it can cause problems like cracking or peeling. So, we have to carefully control the concentration of the solutions and the time it takes for the reaction to occur.

Step 4: Adding a Protective Coat

Once the silver layer is in place, we need to protect it from being damaged or corroded. We do this by applying a layer of protective paint on top of the silver. This paint acts as a barrier between the silver and the environment, preventing moisture, oxygen, and other chemicals from reaching the silver and causing it to tarnish.

We usually use a special type of paint that’s designed for this purpose. It’s applied in a thin, even layer using a spray gun or a roller. After the paint is applied, the mirror is left to dry for a certain period of time to make sure the paint cures properly.

Step 5: Quality Control

Before we send the mirrors out to our customers, we have a strict quality control process. We check each mirror for any defects, like scratches, bubbles in the glass, uneven coating, or discoloration.

We use a combination of visual inspection and some specialized equipment. For example, we might use a light box to check for any imperfections in the glass or the coating. If we find any mirrors that don’t meet our quality standards, we either re – work them or discard them.
